Personal Statement and PIQ Writing

Writing essays is an important part of the college application process. UC campuses require Personal Insight Questions (PIQs), while many private and out-of-state colleges (through the Common App) require a Personal Statement. Both allow you to share your story, highlight your strengths, and explain what makes you unique.

UC Personal Insight Questions (PIQs)

  • Students must answer 4 out of 8 questions (350 words max each).

  • Each response should reflect your personal experiences, goals, and challenges you’ve overcome.

  • There are no right or wrong answers, the goal is to show who you are beyond your grades and test scores.

Common App Personal Statement

  • Required for most private and out-of-state colleges.

  • One essay, up to 650 words, from a choice of prompts.

  • Opportunity to tell your story, reflect on your growth, and show your fit for college.
